I was doing some fun reading over winter break 2011, but I also had the ulterior motives of getting a little research in and prepping for the release of "The Iron Lady" in theaters in late January.
I was reading Eric J. Evans' "Thatcher and Thatcherism," which apart from what I thought were relatively frequent typos (embarrassing...) I must say I rather enjoyed. It was a good quick read, and there were a number of things that caught my eye.
This was one of them.
Though the conclusion of the sentence is a bit underwhelming, I couldn't help but be blown away by the opener:
"Well before Margaret Thatcher's handbag began swirling around the council chambers of Europe, Britain was established as an 'awkward customer' or 'non-communitaire'."
The image of Maggie's swirling handbag gets me every time.
