'Settler Colonialism' in 250 Words

This was an assignment for my history class on settler colonialism. And here is my definition:

Though there are a number of ideas that contribute to the phenomenon of ‘settler colonialism,’ the most prevalent is that settler colonialism is a form of domination of indigenous people by groups of settlers who relocate permanently from oldlands to newlands. This domination emanates either from the imperial metropole from which the settlers emigrated, from the recently established local authority in the new land, from the settler community itself, or from a combination of all these structures. The presence of a significant number of settlers often leads to the assimilation, extermination, marginalization, disempowerment, or subjugation of the indigenous population through the norms, laws, and cultural expectations brought to the new land by the settlers. A twin aspect of settler colonialism occurs with the establishment of settler society in the new land. What follows is an economic relationship with the imperial metropole that initiates between the two the eventual mass transfer of goods, people, ideas, and capital in a mutually beneficial manner. Over time, the special relationship between the two lands wanes and the two become less dependent on each other. However, even after the settler colony evolves into a largely independent settler state, the basic tenets of settler colonialism still remain in the settled land; since the relationship of domination established between indigenous and settler populations at the time of settler invasion was embedded into the foundation of the replicated society, it remains a crucial aspect of cultural, social, political, legal, and economic relations even to the present day.
